Gwinnett Technical College is committed to the economic development of Georgia and its service area. The dramatic increase in demand for life sciences\healthcare education by both businesses and citizens demonstrates a serious need to increase the availability of quality technical education in these critical areas. Gwinnett Tech will be constructing an approximately 80,000 sq. ft. Life Sciences Building. This flagship building will be compatible with the campus master plan as well as the architectural standards established by the college. The interior finish will be of high quality to portray a sustained professional image. The building will be constructed with a minimum of Silver LEED Certification. The space will be designed for the following programs: Nursing, Medical Assisting, Health Information, and Bioscience including the general sciences which support these programs. Space requirements include specialized science and wet labs including clean rooms, general classrooms, large lecture hall(s), faculty offices, stock and equipment rooms as well as common areas for students. The Life Sciences modern labs will require specialized mechanical, ventilation, and utility connections and systems. High tech equipment and instruments will be surrounded by thoughtfully designed laboratory and classroom space in order to maximize student enrollment. It is proposed that general education coursework for associate degree programs would be offered in both day and evening settings. This coursework would involve all general classrooms (occupancy of 30 students) and lecture halls (60-90 students), certain program specific laboratories (chemistry, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, and advanced microbiology), equipment and stockroom support space, and student resource rooms. More specific lab settings, such as tissue culture, protein analysis, and DNA labs will, more than likely, be used primarily for advanced coursework that may also be offered as Technical Certificates of Credit. These specific labs will accommodate 24 students.
