Armed Forces Retirement Home Scott Building
Location Washington, DC
The Hensel Phelps/Cooper Carry Design-Build team was awarded a Design Excellence Design-Build contract through GSA for the design and construction services necessary to consolidate and modernize the residential facilities at the Historic Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) campus in Washington, DC. With two campuses, one in Mississippi and one in DC, the AFRH has provided care to veterans for more than a century and a half.
The project, also known as The Scott Project, was part of GSA’s program for Excellence in Public Buildings. The project scope included the demolition of the existing Scott Building and the construction of a new 160,000 square-foot building. The new building includes 36 rooms for Long Term Care and 24 rooms for Memory Support. It also includes a commercial kitchen, dining room, health and wellness center, multipurpose room and other residential services and administrative functions. The project was required by GSA to achieve LEED Silver certification, but the team far exceeded this goal and the project is now LEED Platinum certified. DiMellaShaffer was the GSA Design Excellence Architect on the project.
