Kilpatrick Townsend Law Offices

Atlanta, Georgia / New York, New York / Washington DC

With 19 offices around the world, and corporate headquarters in Midtown Atlanta, Kilpatrick Townsend selected Cooper Carry to partner with them on three major construction exercises in Atlanta, New York and Washington. The next three years were comprised of back to back design and construction efforts, totaling more than 337,000 square feet of new or renovated interior space. With so many offices around the globe, each with its own distinct national and regional culture, the client was open to the idea that each of their offices could look and feel different. They felt it important to give ownership of the office designs to the local attorneys and staff. Clearly this would not only allow us to explore different and distinct design ideas for each space, it would also create a sense of “buy-in” for the user groups in each market.

Atlanta

The $10 million dollar Atlanta renovation, spanning 10 floors, transformed the firm’s 19-year-old corporate headquarters. The approximately 227,000 square feet contained space for attorneys, administrative support, conferencing, dining, file storage and revitalized restrooms. A fundamental design concept, responding to the current practice of law, employs an innovative planning strategy with the use of demountable partitions and allows flexibility within individual practice groups by creating opportunities for varying sizes and types of work spaces. The upgraded finishes on the upper two floors reflect the public areas of the project, and contain the firm’s main reception area, conferencing space, library and a brand new staff and attorney dining room. This project has achieved LEED gold certification.

New York

The firm’s New York practice had been expanding for many years and the decision to move to a new location was inevitable. High atop the historic Grace building on the 42nd floor and overlooking the majestic New York library on Grant Park, this $4.3 million dollar ground up tenant fit-out project consisted of 44,960 square feet of office, support and conferencing space spanning over 1.5 floors. Building a new space from scratch allowed for maximum efficiency of expensive New York real estate while employing modern trends in law firm design and sustainable construction practices. A regal new reception and conferencing suite is adorned with Italian travertine and recalls the timeless lobby design found at the ground level.

Washington

In Washington DC, Kilpatrick undertook a $3.3 million dollar renovation of their existing 65,000 square foot facility spanning across three floors in the heart of the “district.” Responding to current trends in law firm design, new lower ratios of attorneys to support staff were redistributed, allowing for square footage to become available for new “shared spaces” such as case work rooms and video conferencing facilities. Shifting the current reception area from the lower of their three floors to the middle floor, allowed for access to a new reception/conference suite with access to an outdoor terrace as well as a unique client lounge and dining area.
