Mercer University Center

Location Macon, Georgia
Project Scope
245,000 SF
Mercer University

The fundamental challenge to the design team for this project was to create a facility that fit into the existing campus. The new facility was seen to be a recruiting tool for both academic students and varsity athletics. The facility would also function as a gathering space for students and faculty. The program was challenged to accommodate both intramural and varsity athletics, including a competition basketball arena.

This project consists of the construction of a new 245,000 gross square foot, two-story convocation / recreation center located at the corner of Edgewood Avenue and Adams Street on the campus of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. The exterior skin is composed of brick and cast stone accents, giving the facility a familial relation with the original buildings on campus. The massing of the building is broken down into smaller components to relate to the scale of the existing surrounding structures. The various openings in the skin are constructed of aluminum storefront-glazing systems. The interior finishes are materials that were selected to express a top quality, as well as a long-life, facility. Floors consist of ceramic tile, hardwood, various sports surfaces and carpet; walls consist of impact resistant drywall, synthetic stone, masonry, and ceramic tile. These are all finishes that will require minimum maintenance and prolong the life of the facility.

“I have attended numerous meetings and events at the reference building. I have not been to a single one where anyone had any reaction but absolute delight in the facility. It is the talk of Macon and Mercer. President Kirby speaks often of your creativity and vision for Mercer. I certainly concur.”
