Potomac River Green

Alexandria, VA

The American Clean Skies Foundation asked Cooper Carry to master plan the envisioned future of the site of an outdated coal-fired power plant site. The concept for Potomac River Green (PRG) reflects an innovative vision for transforming one Alexandria’s last remaining Industrial sites into a thriving and sustainable 21st Century residential and commercial neighborhood. The concept creates expanded river access and open space amenities; contains hundreds of new riverfront housing units and hotel rooms; greatly improves community connectivity to the City’s Old Town area; and at the heart of the site, creates a world-class new energy center for the Washington, DC region, including displays of new energy technology, incubator office space and alternative refueling stations. The concept was to develop not only a state-of-the-art facility, but to exceed the expectations of green land development. Smart co-location of uses cuts down the need for cars. Street and trail connections provide for the use of public transportation or regional bike trail to get to and from the site. Throughout, the project includes innovative energy production and use for residential, office, retail and hotel buildings on the site. State of the art stormwater management is a major component of energy production.
