University of Virginia, Pinn Hall Third Floor Laboratory Renovation

Location Charlottesville, Virginia
Project Scope
60,000 sf renovation
University of Virginia

This 60,000 sf laboratory will be used by the UVA School of Medicine departments of Cell Biology and Pharmacology and will house 28 Primary Investigators and 180 FTE staff and students on two floors. A gut renovation, the project will replace all architectural, laboratory and MEP of an existing circa 1970 building located in the heart of the UVA Health Science/SOM campus.

The design creates a state of the art laboratory environment that will attract world-class Principal Investigators and support student participation in funded research. A significant goal is to break down barriers to the integration of UVA’s clinical, research, and teaching missions. To facilitate this goal spaces for collaboration and display have been placed at strategic locations (thresholds and crossroads) that leverage opportunities for interactions across the institution, notably with engineering and the basic sciences. Transparency, collaborative audio-visual technologies, high quality lighting and carefully engineered acoustics will create spaces draw people together. Laboratories are designed in an efficient modular open plan lay-out that is flexible and encourages collaboration between the individual research groups. Centralized support areas and lab support alcoves are distributed at the periphery. Write-up spaces will be in close proximity to the open labs and in visual connection by glass walls to the lab research activities. Conference spaces and “huddle rooms” will enhance the social fabric and allow research groups to engage in collaboration and team meetings.

The Pinn Hall Renovation project is an important element in UVA’s goal is to become one of the nation’s top-20 health and research institutions within ten years. The project’s design has been informed by the Universities recently completed Integrated Space Planning (ISP) effort which reached across the Health Systems platforms to promote innovation, synergy and efficiency.
