Transit Oriented Development and Transit Facilities

Cooper Carry has led the design of more than 75 downtown transit-oriented environments including transit stations themselves. Our designs go beyond the basic functional and operational understanding to embrace the essence of urban lifestyle and community building. We combine economic and activity synergies to create an excitement that is contagious and successful. The creation of people-oriented urban environments is fundamental to our mission.

Lindbergh City Center / Bellsouth Metro Plan
This 30-acre mixed-use development in Atlanta was built from the ground up with the Lindbergh MARTA rail station as the very heart of the project. Transit components included intermodal transfers to bus, taxi, and kiss ride; two bus facilities, MARTA station modifications, transit police facility, parking facilities and work with the traction power installation.
Underground Atlanta
Located in the heart of Atlanta's historic retail and entertainment district and adjacent to the Five Points MARTA station, Underground Atlanta provides this modern southern city with an energetic urban town center attracting both local residents and a thriving convention and tourist trade. The Five Points Station is the central station for the Atlanta rail system and is integrated into the four city block development as a fundamental anchor to the retail diagram of the district.
The Madison at Braddock Road Metro
Located just two blocks from the Braddock Road Metrorail Station and on the Northern edge of the Parker/Grey Historic District in Alexandria, Virginia, The Madison combines 340 residential units with 25,000 square feet of local and national retail over two levels of underground parking. The block's key location at the intersection of North Henry (Rt.1 South) and Madison Street makes it a prime retail corner for "going home from work" traffic, as well as pedestrians walking to and from the Metrorail station.
North Bethesda Town Center
With the transformation of the White Flint Sector from an auto dominant retail corridor along Wisconsin Avenue in Montgomery County, Maryland into a mixed-use transit-oriented district, LCOR Inc., retained Cooper Carry to design a transit-oriented environment on Metro owned property at the White Flint Metrorail Station in North Bethesda, Maryland. The emerging White Flint Sector is the new home to The Strathmore Performing Art Center and The Montgomery County Conference, each respectively anchoring the South and the North end of the District.
Colorado Center
Located at the southeast corner of Interstate 25 and Colorado Boulevard in Denver, Colorado, Colorado Center was designed and constructed years before final design and construction of Denver's light rail transit system. Understanding the importance of anticipating an emerging transit-oriented environment, Cooper Carry encouraged the planning of a phased mixed-use community that addressed the location of the future light rail station with the orientation of buildings, open space and pedestrian access.
Lancaster City Amtrak Station Rehabilitation
Cooper Carry is on board as the architect for the rehabilitation of the historic Lancaster City Amtrak Station. This station can be a traveler's first impression and a lasting memory of the City, and can also anchor and catalyze new development within the northern edge of Lancaster.
Pittsburgh North Side Station, North Shore Connector
The North Side rail station is the first stop of the North Shore extension of the Pittsburgh rail system outside the central business district. The station will serve as the primary transit connection to PNC Park, the home field of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball franchise and secondarily Heinz Field, home of the Steelers. The station threads beneath a multi level parking structure that will serve both downtown commuter traffic and sports fans.
Indian Creek MARTA Station
The Indian Creek transit station acts as the end of the line for the eastern leg of Atlanta's rail system. As such, the station is the primary intermodal hub of 6 bus lines serving the eastern suburban communities. Additionally, the station acted as a fundamental transportation hub during the Atlanta Olympic Games serving all east Atlanta sporting venues. Using natural materials of stone and heavy timber, the open air station is reminiscent of a park pavilion while serving the high volume pedestrian and vehicular and bus traffic.
San Bernardino Intermodal Transit Station and Village
Cooper Carry has recently been awarded Pre-Development, Conceptual Design, and Visioning Services for a San Bernardino, California Transit Station and Transit Village.
Heritage Fields
Cooper Carry listened to Irvine, California and came to understand that it is green, smart and creative and offers an enhanced quality of life. The vision for the Transit-Oriented-Development at Heritage Fields captures these qualities and capitalizes on connecting a great transit center with the Great Park. As one of the hubs for the commuter rail from Los Angeles to San Diego, the Irvine Transit Center Metro link station, offers the opportunity to reduce the automobile dependency in Southern California and integrates a strong connection to employment hubs through out the system.
Memphis Main Street Redevelopment Plan
The redevelopment plan for Memphis' Main Street district, an area 6 blocks in length and 2 blocks wide, was commissioned in an effort to bring retail and residential vitality back to the corridor. As the city wide trolley system gains in popularity as a vital mode of interconnected transit, the Main Street corridor will act as the urban spine connecting neighborhoods to the employment and entertainment centers that the downtown offers.
LaVilla Neighborhood Plan
The redevelopment of the LaVilla neighborhood that surrounds the existing convention center and the Historic train depot will be enhanced by the careful integration of this upgraded multi modal center and the parking associated with it. The Cooper Carry team worked with stakeholders and neighborhood groups to develop a vision for a public realm and private block development that would embrace and activate the streetscape both around and under the elevated rail station, the expanded bus facility, and a transit parking facility planned by the Transit Authority.
Anaheim PacifiCenter and Anaheim Canyon Master Plan
Anaheim Pacificenter is a privately owned parcel of land that is adjacent to the existing platform for the Inland Empire line of the Metro Link system. The Cooper Carry plan incorporates a vision that offers a walk-able, integrated neighborhood that provides a direct link to the new platforms.
The Value of an Urban Void as a Transit Oriented Development
Cooper Carry explored the redevelopment possibilities of an "urban void" of 416 acres in central Atlanta - an industrial neighborhood crisscrossed by two rail lines, MARTA commuter rail, and an interstate highway. We re-envisioned the area as a sustainable, mixed-use transit-oriented development at the heart of the regional transit system, linked to neighboring destinations and the city's principal arteries.
