Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Beach Resort

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Frenchman’s Reef: A Reimagined Caribbean Icon

After years of meticulous restoration and inspired reimagination, Frenchman’s Reef has triumphantly reopened, welcoming guests back to the sun-kissed shores of St. Thomas. This iconic destination now boasts two distinct yet harmonious resorts: The Westin Beach Resort & Spa and Morningstar Buoy Haus Beach Resort, Autograph Collection.

The Johnson Studio played a pivotal role in this transformation, collaborating with Fortress Investment Group, Kollin Altomare Architects, and 1650 to breathe new life into the resort's social and culinary spaces. The Johnson studio designed six of the nine on-site restaurants and bars, as well as the inviting lobby at The Westin, each space thoughtfully curated to reflect the island's rich heritage and natural beauty.

Culinary Journeys Across the Reef:

  • Sugarfin Rum Bar: An elegant fusion of Asian flavors, offering fresh sushi, poke bowls, and a curated selection of locally distilled rums.
  • Shorebird: A family-friendly haven serving hearty breakfasts and leisurely brunches with panoramic sea views.
  • Luna Mar: A coastal Mediterranean dining experience, where handmade pastas and seafood delicacies are savored under the stars.
  • The Edge Bar: A swim-up oasis perched above the Caribbean, perfect for sipping signature cocktails while soaking in the infinity pool.
  • Salt Shack: A laid-back beach bar and grill, where Baja-style tacos meet the rhythm of the waves.
  • Tide Pool: Exclusive cabanas and a chic bar at Buoy Haus, offering a serene retreat by the water's edge.

Design Inspired by Heritage and Nature:

Drawing inspiration from St. Thomas's Dutch colonial past, the design language weaves together white oak millwork, warm neutral palettes, and subtle hints of signature Dutch blue. Restored original paneled oak doors greet guests, evoking a sense of timeless elegance. At The Westin's lobby, a bespoke bas-relief sculpture, inspired by the native Night Blooming Cereus cactus, serves as a captivating focal point, marrying artistry with the island's natural flora. Every detail across Frenchman's Reef has been meticulously crafted to offer guests an immersive experience that celebrates the island's cultural tapestry and breathtaking landscapes, setting a new standard for Caribbean luxury.
