The Quest Westside Impact Center

Atlanta, GA

Situated in the historic Vine City neighborhood, the Quest Westside Impact Center (QWIC) is one of many transformative projects developed as a result of the Westside TAD Strategic Implementation Plan, developed by Cooper Carry and APD Urban Planning and Management in collaboration with Invest Atlanta. Quest Communities is a nonprofit organization that develops affordable housing and provides community services to the underserved.

The Strategic Plan goals were to create a strategic, sustainable and implementable vision for the Westside TAD Neighborhoods to guide future investments; and, to build human capital and increase job creation as an economic development strategy. The redesigned QWIC was a first step in fulfilling these goals.

Cooper Carry turned a dilapidated building into a multi-functional space to fit all of QWIC’s programs, which included offices, a community center, educational services, and local retail. To keep the building’s pedestrian-friendly size in the mixed-use space, retail was moved to the back of the building for easier in-and-out access. An outdoor balcony space was created just for employees, and the steel bracing frames required for structural support were embraced as framing elements to enhance the style of the space. The stairs at the front of the building do double duty as stoops where individuals meet, relax, and spend time together, further enhancing the community feel.

As a community-based developer we are always starting our thoughts with what does the community residents want out of our developments. Cooper Carry was very helpful on the front end with our public interest design efforts listening to shared feedback and incorporating it into a shared design vison of our new Impact Center. Additionally, throughout the entire project Cooper Carry provided the expertise and oversight necessary to ensure the project was being built as designed. We are extremely pleased with the leadership and talent assigned to our project and look forward to working with Cooper Carry in the near future. — Leonard L. Adams Jr., President and CEO Quest Communities
