South STEM 6-12 School

Fairburn, GA

Fulton County Schools has 44 acres of land dedicated to the development of the new Middle/High School.  The new school will be positioned at the top of the hill, to take advantage of the existing topography and site ecology.  Through advanced analysis tools the building orientation and configurations are set to conserve energy, maximize daylighting, manage glare, and support thermal comfort.  The site design incorporates low maintenance landscaping and xeriscaping which requires little to no irrigation, preserving natural site features.  The courtyards are extensions of the classroom providing opportunities for exploration and education.

The plan provides for a gymnasium, classroom pods, music technology, student center, auditorium, and administration.  For project-based learning activities, extended learning areas and maker spaces are located within the grade levels and across subjects to enhance collaborative learning and provide spaces for small group and learning extensions near the general classroom spaces.

The Student center is planned for the center of the facility and will act as a “touchdown area” for students throughout the school day. This space combines the functions of the library/media center and the cafeteria.  The student center supports large and small groups and breakout groups. This space supports collaboration and learning in a digital environment.  It also provides students the ability to create 21st century end products such as videos, podcasts, webpages and other multimedia projects.
