North Side Station, North Shore Connector

Pittsburgh, PA

The North Side rail station is the first stop of the North Shore extension of the Pittsburgh rail system outside the central business district. The station will serve as the primary transit connection to PNC Park, the home field of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball franchise and secondarily Heinz Field, home of the Steelers. The station threads beneath a multi level parking structure that will serve both downtown commuter traffic and sports fans. As well, the location and design of the station entrances were carefully coordinated to support the planned mixed-use community between the two sporting venues. As one of only three underground stations within the city, the station design celebrates the mining history of the region through spatial and material references to geology and traditional historic mining tunnel construction. This integrates with the high tech notion of time travel at the platform level.
