Mixed-Use Design in the Shaw Neighborhood

Designed by Cooper Carry in collaboration with Michael Marshall Design, The Langston on Seventh is a mixed-use residential building in Washington, DC’s Shaw neighborhood. Spanning nearly an entire city block, the design incorporates three distinct masses to visually break up the 450’ long structure, grounded by a strong vertical focus at the residential entrance. This pattern creates a central amenity accessible from each level featuring a unique double-height interior terrace.

Flexible Living Spaces

The Langston’s studio, one- and two-bedroom units are flexible to accommodate remote work and study with adaptable furniture configurations. Private, double-height outdoor terraces offer ample open-air spaces for sunset reading or socializing.

Rooftop and Resident Amenities

The rooftop offers welcoming spaces for a variety of activities with amenities such as a swimming pool, outdoor grills, dining areas, and a dog run. From there, residents are treated to sweeping views of downtown DC, the Capitol Building, and the Washington Monument. The ground level of the building is highly activated, with retail, a gym, and a double-level amenity at the residential entrance.

Transit-Oriented Location

The Langston is across the street from the Shaw/Howard University Metro rail station, providing easy access via various modes of transportation. The design of the building was influenced by its proximity to the station and its underground tunnels, which required creative structural approaches to ensure it does not interfere with the transit infrastructure (zero lot line construction).

Structural Innovation

Cooper Carry worked closely with SK&A Structural Engineers to develop a creative solution that allowed the building to cantilever over the metro tunnels.
