The Anne Springs Close Greenway is a 2,100-acre open space with forests, fields, lakes, and natural amenities in Fort Mill, SC. In addition to being a home for Greenway operations, like membership and support, the building offers retail, food and beverage options, and an event center for community and private events. 505Design at Cooper Carry was challenged to design a building with a warm hospitable sensibility that would also encourage visitors to get out and explore the landscape. The adage of the design became “Catch and Release,” where the design compels visitors to come in, but not stay indoors too long.
Expansive views across the fields and orchards inspire picnics and strolling, while adjacent trails and the forest edge invite visitors to explore. The Gateway Canteen features simple elements, yet each coordinated to serve a distinct purpose. For example, natural materials recall the elemental, and the heavy masonry walls anchor the airy, sunlight-filled space to the earth. A warm wood ceiling drapes over the main space and frames views to the landscape. Outside, a polished concrete floor flows from porch to the nearby trail.
