The Chemists’ Club Hotel Transformation

New York, NY

The Chemists’ Club Hotel – A Historic Midtown NYC Transformation

Cooper Carry proudly led the architectural renovation of The Chemists’ Club Hotel, formerly known as The Dylan Hotel, located on the iconic Library Way—just steps from Grand Central Station and the New York Public Library. Originally constructed in 1911 and designed in the French Renaissance style, the building was purpose-built for New York's community of chemists and scholars. Today, it has been reimagined as a hospitality destination that honors its intellectual legacy while meeting the expectations of modern travelers.

Honoring the Legacy of the Chemists’ Club

Throughout the renovation, Cooper Carry embraced the opportunity to reconnect the building to its original identity. Historic preservation and adaptive reuse were at the heart of the design approach. Distinctive original elements—including coffered ceilings, a monumental stair, ribbed groin vaults, plaster Corinthian columns, and stained glass details—were carefully preserved and accentuated to showcase the building’s rich character.

A Lobby That Invites Community and Connection

A custom oak and curved glass vestibule welcomes guests into a light-filled lobby where mirrored surfaces reflect the plaster detailing above. The space is designed as a modern gathering point, offering coworking, lounging, and conversation areas in a layout that feels both welcoming and refined. Across from the open seating area, a redesigned reception desk blends seamlessly into the historic surroundings.

Restoring the Iconic Alchemy Suite

Located on the 4th floor, the Alchemy Suite is one of the most striking spaces in the hotel. Original to the 1911 structure and designed in the Gothic style, the suite features a vaulted groin ceiling supported by Corinthian pilasters. Modern linear lighting highlights the architectural ribs of the vault, drawing the eye upward to a bold, contemporary fixture that introduces contrast and sophistication.

Guestroom Updates and a Presidential View

Guestrooms and corridors throughout the 16-story building were fully refreshed with elegant finishes and thoughtful detailing. A standout addition is the new 12th-floor Presidential Suite, which opens onto a private balcony that spans the building’s façade—offering sweeping views down Library Way and a clear sightline to the Chrysler Building just two blocks away.

Rooted in History, Designed for the Future

The Chemists’ Club Hotel renovation brings new life to a historic address in the heart of Manhattan. By preserving the building’s architectural heritage while introducing contemporary hospitality features, Cooper Carry helped ensure this historic structure continues to serve—and inspire—future generations.
