The Hatchery provides Emory University students, faculty, alumni, and the community with experiences focused on entrepreneurship, innovation, and industry partnerships. Emory enlisted Cooper Carry to create configurable spaces that support functions high in demand now, as well as future opportunities.
Previously an organic grocery store, the design team creatively designed an adaptive reuse of the space as an innovation center. Many of the facility’s original features – the concrete floors, ambient lighting and even signage – were reused to reduce waste. Reclaimed wood that is FloorScore (low VOC) certified line the walls to soften light and sound in the facility. The sliding markerboards are made of polycarbonate, a product that has minimal waste and is completely recyclable. Variations of blue pops out at strategic locations to encourage creativity and lend an eclectic vibe to the center. The space embraces a start-up and playful culture that features a maker space, meeting rooms, event space, and a break area.
The center offers a unique space that is flexible and supports collaboration at all scales within Emory and its partners across its network. Entrepreneurs, innovators, industry thought leaders, government agencies, nonprofits, and alumni will share their experiences and constitute the center’s larger network.
